Morning light spills through the fresh windows of Stone Private school. Desks are lined in neat rows, and Kit Heart sits in uniform with the other students, school bag at his feet.
At the front, the teacher grips the chalk too hard. His shoulders hunch. He pauses mid-sentence, blinking like the room has tilted.
Then the boys in the class start shifting, one by one, as if an awkward itch runs through the whole room. Shoes press tighter. Postures stoop. The air goes tense and weird.
The teacher’s face tightens. His hands drag over his arms, and his stance grows rougher, heavier, less polished, like he is trying to remember how to stand normally.

Kit Heart
His shoes look too small all of a sudden.
Kit’s classmates glance around at each other in confusion, but the change keeps pushing through the room. The boys look more primitive by the second, all awkward limbs and huge feet crowding the desks.

The Teacher
Everyone stay seated... and tell me what you are feeling right now.
The teacher plants one broad foot near the front of the room and reaches toward Kit’s row, stopping just short, waiting. The whole class hangs on what Kit does next.

“Kit can’t remember how to talk like a boy?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 18)

Kit Heart
My tongue feels thick and heavy, like a stone in my mouth, and the words I try to form just come out as low, guttural grunts.

The Teacher
It is getting harder to speak, is it not, Kit. The old ways are returning to us, and the language of men is slipping away.
