Nathaniel arrives at the King’s castle beneath a sky bruised with stormlight. Guards crowd the courtyard, shouting over bells, weeping courtiers, and the clangor of sealed gates.

Inside the royal chamber, the king, an elderly man with a gaunt face and silver hair, dressed in a crimson robe lies motionless beside the throne, the assassination complete. A mercenary captain stands before him with sword lowered, barring the palace guard.

No one touches the body. Not until we know what killed him, or what his death has awakened.

The captain is a broad-shouldered middle-aged woman in scarred brown leather, iron-gray hair braided tight, one pale eye fixed on every approaching blade.

Beneath the throne, a pulse of unnatural violet light spills across the marble. It fades, then returns stronger, tracing thin symbols through the floor.

Captain, stand aside. By royal law, the guard takes command.

The mercenary soldiers begin backing away from the throne, shields raised but feet unsteady. One drops his spear as the chamber fills with a low, subterranean hum.

Nathaniel crosses the chamber through the violet-lit symbols. His feared reputation makes the nearest mercenaries lower their shields before he reaches their captain.

The mercenary captain turns her pale eye toward him, sword still lowered. Nathaniel takes her weapon, twists her arm behind her back, and fastens her wrists with the palace guard lieutenant’s iron manacles.

So the king’s hound comes to collar me. Fine. Ask your questions before this palace tears itself apart.

A sharp violet spark leaps from the floor symbols into Nathaniel’s palm as the mercenary captain crosses them. The skin reddens, and the chamber’s hum rises around the captured woman.

Captain, you are under royal custody. Your company will surrender its arms and remain where it stands.

The mercenaries obey, stacking swords and spears beneath the watching guards. The mercenary captain remains upright in Nathaniel’s hold, secured but studying the pulsing throne.

Question me quickly, guard. Whatever killed the king is listening, and it has just noticed you.

“Why are you in the castle what are you motives here? You do realize you are the under suspicion of murdering the king right?”

Why are you in the castle, and what are your motives? You know you are under suspicion of murdering the king.

The mercenary captain’s pale eye shifts from Nathaniel to the king. Violet light crawls over her manacles, throwing hard shadows across her scarred face.

the mercenary captain

I came under a sealed contract from the royal chancellor. The summons ordered my company to reinforce the inner palace before dawn.

the mercenary captain

My motive was payment, and the prevention of a coup. I found the king already dying, with that cursed light beneath his throne.

The palace guard lieutenant steps closer, an adult man with a lean build, close-cropped dark hair, olive skin, and a blue-trimmed steel cuirass, sword angled toward her ribs but not touching. Behind him, the surrendered mercenaries, a group of adult men and women in mismatched dark leathers and dull steel helmets exchange frightened glances.

the mercenary captain

Yes, I understand the suspicion. My blade was drawn, my soldiers held the chamber, and I stood beside his body. Convenient evidence, all of it.

But search my sword and question the chancellor’s seal. The killer used something beneath the throne, and your court invited it inside.

Nathaniel crouches beside the throne and studies the violet symbols. Their lines are cut into the marble, but the light moves through them like blood through veins.

The symbols form a binding circle, not a killing mark.

At the circle’s center, he finds a hair-thin break beneath the throne’s rear claw. Ash and black wax fill the gap, carrying the chancellor’s seal pressed backward.

the mercenary captain

There. That is where the light came from. I saw no hand touch it.

When Nathaniel angles his view, the symbols resolve into an ancient command: open the royal bloodline, bind the crown, awaken what sleeps below.

the palace guard lieutenant

You found something. Tell me plainly, guard. Is the throne itself the weapon?

The mercenary captain leans against her manacles as the violet pulse answers from beneath the marble.

“I search beneath the throne for a way to seal it”

Nathaniel reaches beneath the throne’s rear claw, feeling along the broken groove while violet radiance pulses through the marble and warms his knuckles.

The break is the breach. The seal must be closed from within the circle.

His fingers find a shallow socket hidden beneath the claw. Inside rests a disk of blackened silver, engraved with the same command but turned inward, its rim stained with old wax.

the palace guard lieutenant

A seal-key. By the crown, the chancellor planned this.

When Nathaniel fits the disk into the socket, the broken lines draw together. The violet light folds inward, and the subterranean hum sinks to a strained whisper.

the mercenary captain

the mercenary captain

Do not remove it. That circle is closed now, but whatever lies below has felt the bloodline open.

Then we hold this chamber and send for the chancellor. No one touches the throne until the king’s death is answered for.

Nathaniel examines the king without disturbing the body. The crimson robe bears no tear, and the skin shows no bruise, puncture, or blade wound.

The death left no mark on the flesh.

He parts the king’s silver hair and finds a faint violet stain at the base of the skull, shaped like a crown with its points turned inward.

the mercenary captain

That appeared when the throne awakened. He gasped once, then his eyes went empty. The light was drawn out of him.

Nathaniel follows the stain’s fading threads beneath the collar. They converge at the heart, where a cold radiance lingers though the king’s body remains still.

the palace guard lieutenant

Then the circle did not kill him by force. It opened the royal bloodline and took something from him.

The inward-facing command confirms it: the throne’s ritual extracted the king’s vital essence as a key, leaving death behind while awakening the presence below.
