Air tears like wet cloth, and Torix Reincor slams onto cold stone in a burst of white light.
He lies on the altar of a mountain shrine, beneath a roof of black ice and hanging prayer chains.
Below him, the floor is carved with a prophecy in deep, worn cuts, circles and runes packed tight around a central sigil.
Across the altar, a lone swordsman rises from a kneel with slow, careful balance, as if pain has taught him to waste nothing.
Glowing runes crawl over his skin in bright seams, and his hand trembles on the hilt of a blade that gives off a low, sour hum.

Ardent Vale
Tell me, sky-born. Did you come to break my curse, or finish it?

Torix Reincor
The runes on him are active, and the altar beneath me is part of the same working.
Wind claws through the shrine mouth, rattling the chains harder, while the swordsman keeps his blade half-drawn and waits for Torix Reincor's answer.

Learn who cursed the mountain shrine
“"I know not where I am, sir. This is not the Sleepless White...but...but if a curse has befallen you and I can aid in some way, then I shall gladly do so. What is your name sir?"”
FAILURE (Mediocre Oratory, rolled +0)

Torix’s words come out small in the cold shrine, careful and earnest, and the swordsman’s hard stare loosens by a fraction.

Ardent Vale
You are lost, then. Not a herald. Not a priest. Good.
He eases the blade a finger wider from its sheath, just enough to show he still means caution, not attack.

Ardent Vale
My name is Ardent Vale. And if you mean to help, look at the altar, not me.

Torix Reincor
The runes around the central sigil are newer than the rest.
Torix’s glance catches a second script tucked beneath the prophecy cuts, a thin tracing in a different hand, half-hidden under soot and old wax.

Ardent Vale
Someone added to the shrine after the curse took hold. If you can read that hand, we may learn who bound me here.
“"Well met, Sir Ardent. Pray, grant me a moment's time to study the runes." Torix will focus deeply to read the runes and sigils, hoping he can indeed help the stranger before him. While lost and confused himself, a soul seeking Sid should always take priority.”
FAILURE (Good Knowledge (Occult), rolled -3)

Torix leans in over the altar and traces the hidden handscript with careful focus, but the lines seem to slip when he tries to set them in order. The old cut prophecy and the newer writing refuse to sit together.

Torix Reincor
Well met, Sir Ardent. Pray, grant me a moment to study the runes.
His finger hovers, then withdraws. The curse-work answers with a sickly shimmer, blurring one stroke and leaving the rest harder to judge than before.

Torix Reincor
The newer script is there, but the meaning will not hold still.

Ardent Vale
Careful. The shrine hates being read.
Ardent steps closer, blade still half-drawn, and angles himself so the altar is between them. The runes on his skin pulse once, in uneasy answer to the inscription.

Ardent Vale
If you cannot name the hand that did this, say so plainly. I need to know whether I hunt a murderer, or beg a witness.
“"Magic is fickle. It is sentient with a mind it's own. Perhaps you can explain to me how such a curse befell you whilst I focus more on the runes? My deepest apologies, but in the Sleepless White, Luxon taught magic but not oft script."”
SUCCESS (Good Knowledge (Occult), rolled +1)

Torix follows the newer handscript by pattern instead of by symbol, and the trick gives. The hidden lines settle long enough to be read, naming a binding rite cast by a mountain ascetic called Brother Oren.

Torix Reincor
The curse is no mere accident. It is work of Brother Oren, if this writing speaks true.
A faint crack of light runs through the altar’s cut stone, and a sliver of dust flakes from Torix’s fingertip where the shimmer bites back. The reading is won, but the shrine marks the effort.

Ardent Vale
Oren... then it was a man I trusted. Gods rot him.

Ardent Vale
He stands very still, as if the name itself has taken weight from his shoulders and put a knife in its place.

Ardent Vale
If Oren is the hand behind this, tell me plainly, Torix, do we seek him for judgment, or do we drag this curse from me by force?
The runes on Ardent’s skin pulse in answer, not angry now, but waiting.
“"Dragging a curse without knowing it's cause and purpose could be fatal, no different that ingestion flora of unknown origin, Sir Ardent. I would need to know more of your course's nature to answer such...furthermore, who is this Brother Oren? Brother implies family...dies it not? Where...even are we, for that matter? A strange mountain temple is a far fry from blanched, crystal trees." The dragonkin youth looks about his surrounding in confusion before innocently tilting his head to Ardent.”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +2)
Torix lowers his gaze from the altar and lets the question land. The shrine is quiet except for the thin hiss of the cursed runes along Ardent’s skin.

Torix Reincor
If I am to judge this curse, I must know its nature. Brother Oren... is he kin to you? And where are we, exactly?
Torix glances around the stone chamber, the white crystal memory of his home lingering in the look, then tilts his head back toward Ardent.

Ardent Vale
No kin. A title, not a bloodline. Oren was a mountain brother, one who knelt here and lied with holy words.

Ardent Vale
This is the Altar of the Cursed, high in the north face of Valepeak. A shrine for prayers, and for punishment when prayers fail.

Ardent Vale
Judgment would kill what is left of me. If this stranger truly wants the curse understood, I may have one chance left.

Ardent Vale
Tell me, Torix Reincor, if the rite can be unraveled, will you help me live?

“"Valepeak? Luxon never mentioned such a place....ahh, no matter." Torix rest a hand to his heart, closing his eyes with a sincere nod to the man before him. " I am no god to my knowledge, so I cannot pass judgement on the life of another unless you defend myself or the innocent...but I see you wish for aid, to live...and in my heart, that is reason enough to help you."”
FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -2)

Torix lowers his hand from his chest, and the shrine seems to wait with him. Ardent’s shoulders slacken a fraction, as if the answer has weight enough to be felt before it is spoken.

Torix Reincor
Valepeak... Luxon never named it. No matter. I am no god, and I will not judge your life. If you want help to live, that is reason enough for me to help.
The words leave Torix plainly, but the oath in them does not land cleanly. The runes on Ardent’s skin pulse once, bright and uncertain, and his mouth parts with a stunned breath.

Ardent Vale
You mean it. Most would hedge, or ask for payment, or look away from a man like me.

Ardent Vale
There is no mockery in him. No priest’s hunger either.
Ardent steps back from the altar, then lets one hand rest over the runes at his ribs as if to steady them. The hard edge in his posture gives way to something rawer, almost embarrassed.

Ardent Vale
Then stay. If you truly choose this, I will tell you what the curse does, where it bites deepest, and what I feared to name before.
