Rui arrives at a medieval village where shutters slam in uneven waves. Villagers crowd the muddy square, clutching baskets, tools, and one another as gray smoke stains the distant sky.

Mizuki Akiyama, a young adult wood elf with long curly pink hair tied in a green satin bow, stands among them in green and gold robes, bow raised.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Everyone, stay calm! Has anyone actually seen the dragon, or are we chasing a rumor with very loud feet?

A fresh roar rolls from beyond the fields, deep enough to tremble through the square. Chickens scatter beneath carts, and several villagers cry out.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

That was no story. Something enormous is out there.

Mizuki turns sharply toward the sound, green bow fluttering behind them. Their fingers tighten around the arrow, though their stance remains deliberately steady.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

You there, traveler! If you can help, keep your eyes on the fields. We need facts before panic buries this village.

Certainly. Before I go, what was your name?

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama! Archer, wood elf, collector of excellent trinkets, and apparently today's dragon investigator.

Mizuki lowers their bow just enough to offer a quick, bright smile. Behind them, the villagers part toward the eastern fields, revealing a muddy track between leaning fences.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

The smoke is rising near the old stone mill. I saw the shadow pass over the wheat, but it did not attack the village.

A second gust carries the smell of scorched grass from the east. The track is clear, and the distant fields provide open ground with few places for anything enormous to hide.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Follow that path and watch the sky. If you find its trail, signal with a raised hand. I will cover you from here.

Mizuki plants their feet beneath the fluttering green bow, eyes fixed on the fields. The village’s panic settles into a tense, watchful silence as the way forward opens.

Director's note

Rui starts walking towards the village gates, then stops and turns to ask Mizuki a question

“Akiyama, do you have any way for me to contact you over a long distance? Say I find him tomorrow...?”

Rui starts toward the village gates, purple hair stirring in the smoky wind. After several steps, they stop, turn, and face Mizuki again.

Akiyama, do you have any way for me to contact you over a long distance? Say I find him tomorrow?

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Long distance? I know a little whispering magic, but not enough to reach beyond these fields. Still, I can try.

Mizuki touches two fingers to their pointed ear and murmurs an elven phrase. The air tightens, then snaps back with a dry crack; their bowstring hums, and the spell’s glow gutters out.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

There. The dragon’s presence is muddling the magic. I cannot promise a message will cross that distance, and forcing it could make the words arrive wrong.

Mizuki pulls a green thread from their belt pouch and knots it around an arrow shaft, marking a practical signal rather than a spell.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Use this at the old stone mill. Leave it where I can see it, and I will know you found something. For anything farther, return here with the facts.

Director's note

Rui runs off towards the old mill to check it out.

“Gotcha.”

Rui gives a small acknowledging nod, then pivots toward the eastern track. Their waist-length purple hair streams behind them as they break into a brisk run.

Good luck, Rui! Keep your eyes open, and remember the green thread!

Muddy ground gives beneath Rui’s boots, but the path remains clear. Leaning fences slide past on either side while smoke drifts above the wheat.

Rui Kamishiro

The scorched-grass scent is growing stronger.

Behind them, Mizuki stays at the village edge with bow ready, watching Rui’s progress until the track dips between the fields.

The old stone mill rises ahead, dark against the smoky sky. Its weathered sails stand still, and no dragon is visible from the approach.

Rui reaches the mill without incident, slowing near its outer wall as the smell of burned grass hangs over the silent field.

Director's note

Rui looks around stealthily for the dragon, trying to avoid a confrontation.

A Dragon Beyond the Fields

Rui presses close to the mill’s rough stone wall, keeping their purple hair tucked behind one shoulder as they scan the silent field and motionless sails.

Rui Kamishiro

No wingbeats, no fresh shadow, and no movement in the wheat.

They advance in short, careful steps, placing each boot where the mud is already disturbed. A broad scorched path cuts through the grass toward the mill’s rear.

Near the path’s edge, several deep impressions deform the earth. They are too large for any village beast, and each one points toward the mill instead of away.

A faint rasp rises from beyond the mill, followed by a tremor through the stones beneath Rui’s hand. Dust trickles from the wall.

The nearest sail gives a sudden wooden creak, though the air remains still. Somewhere behind the mill, something shifts its weight with immense care.

Rui lowers their stance and angles toward the corner, using the wall for cover. The rear yard remains hidden, but a thin ribbon of smoke curls above it.

Rui edges around the mill’s corner without disturbing the loose stones. The rear yard opens below: churned mud, flattened grass, and a shattered water trough beneath drifting smoke.

No dragon stands in the yard. Beyond it, however, a wide furrow cuts through the wheat toward the northern hills, its edges blackened but not burning.

Rui Kamishiro

Rui Kamishiro

The strongest magical residue lies ahead, while the older traces lead away from the village.

Rui quiets their breathing and reaches with arcane senses. Heat has soaked the stones, but the dragon’s presence is fainter here than along the fresh trail.

A low rasp answers from inside the mill. The sound is smaller than the earlier roar, followed by a brief pulse of magic beneath the floorboards.

At the threshold, muddy impressions overlap older claw marks. The newest tracks turn toward a rear doorway concealed behind fallen sacks, while the northern trail remains open.

From the village edge, a green-threaded arrow suddenly rises above the wheat, Mizuki’s signal catching the smoky light. The yard falls silent again.

“Are there multiple dragons possibly confusing Rui's sensing abilities?”

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 7)

Rui’s arcane reach brushes the concealed rear doorway, then the northern furrow, and finds neither trail singular. Several distinct magical signatures overlap, layered like footprints in ash.

One presence is broad and hot, another cold and metallic, while lesser traces flicker beneath both. More than one dragon has crossed this ground, and something else is masking their paths.

Rui Kamishiro

Rui Kamishiro

The residue is not one creature’s passage.

The pulse beneath the floor answers Rui’s senses with a clear direction: the hidden rear doorway opens into a descending stone passage, untouched by the recent collapse.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Rui! I saw that signal from the village. Please tell me you found one dragon, not a whole draconic gathering!

The green-threaded arrow remains raised above the wheat. Through the layered magic, Rui also detects a faint protective ward around the mill’s lower passage, marking a safer route.

Behind the sacks, dust settles over the concealed doorway. The northern furrow stays open, but the mill now offers a concrete path beneath the overlapping trails.

Director's note

Rui theorizes that there is one or two adult dragons who come and go, along with a juvenile dragon. They are not aggressive, but the baby likely is still learning to control their magic, which is why they continue to create fires inadvertently. Rui turns from the northern furrow and walks back toward the village gates, then stops. Their purple hair settles as they look over one shoulder toward Mizuki.

Rui Kamishiro

Rui Kamishiro

Mizuki, can you hear me clearly from there?

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Clearly enough! Though if you are asking because something enormous is sneaking up behind you, I would appreciate a warning!

Without answering, Rui pivots and runs for the mill again. They keep low along the wall, scanning the wheat, roofline, and open sky while avoiding the broken trough.

Rui Kamishiro

The hot signature returns, the metallic one departs, and a smaller pulse remains below.

Arcane impressions settle into a pattern: one or two adult dragons pass through the area, while a juvenile presence lingers near the mill. None bears the sharp pressure of deliberate attack.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Rui? You ran back toward it! Is that good news, or the sort that makes me regret giving you directions?

A faint flare glows beneath the concealed doorway, followed by a muffled crackle. The protective ward holds, and a thin thread of smoke curls safely into the dark passage.

Rui slips behind the fallen sacks and eases through the concealed doorway. The descending passage is narrow, its ward glowing softly beneath their careful steps.

Rui Kamishiro

Rui Kamishiro

The smaller pulse is close, and its magic is uncontrolled rather than hostile.

Below, the passage opens into a buried chamber. A young dragon, apparently female, crouches beside a cracked stone basin, blue-gray scales dusted with soot and small wings tucked tight.

The juvenile lifts its wedge-shaped head. A spark jumps from its nostrils to the basin, where a brief tongue of flame flares and vanishes without spreading.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Rui! I heard that crackle. Please tell me you found a fireplace, not a baby dragon with terrible aim!

From far above, a deep answering rumble passes through the stones. The juvenile lowers its head, watches Rui warily, and gathers a faint orange glow beneath its scales.

Beyond the chamber, two larger magical signatures drift nearer, one hot and one metallic. The ward brightens between Rui and the young dragon, holding the passage steady.

Director's note

Rui crouches down and keeps any weapons out of sight. He searches his pack for any food or item he can use to gain the dragons' trust.

Rui lowers into a crouch, keeping their hands away from any weapon and their movements slow. The ward’s glow softens as they search their pack.

The chamber smells of soot, damp stone, and scorched grain. Beyond the juvenile, the passage forks toward deeper darkness while distant magic presses closer.

The adult signatures approach, but neither is accelerating toward the chamber.

Rui finds a wrapped heel of travel bread and sets it on the floor between them, then withdraws their hand without sudden motion.

A low, uncertain chirr vibrates through the chamber. The orange glow beneath its blue-gray scales flickers, then steadies.

Mizuki Akiyama

Rui, I can hear you moving down there. Is the little one still calm? Please say yes before the larger ones arrive!

The juvenile leans toward the bread, nostrils twitching. Above the chamber, stone groans under a passing weight, and a metallic magical signature pauses beyond the ward.

Ssa... va-lo-ra.

The juvenile nudges the bread closer, then releases a tiny spark that dies against the damp stone. Beyond the ward, metal scrapes softly over the passage floor.

A large adult dragon appears at the fork, revealing a broad-jawed male with two short horns, its iron-gray scales reflecting the wardlight and its folded wings nearly filling the passage. One amber eye fixes on Rui, watchful rather than enraged.

Mizuki Akiyama

Mizuki Akiyama

Rui, that sounded like draconic! Is the little one answering you, or did I just hear an extremely dangerous echo?

The little one understands your peace, small spell-maker. Keep your hands gentle, and the fire will remain harmless.

The juvenile dragon creeps forward and takes the bread between tiny teeth. A warm spark leaks from its nostrils, but the father’s steady rumble settles it before flame can form.

Mizuki Akiyama

That is definitely a dragon speaking! Rui, please tell me you have not somehow become their babysitter already!

Beyond the father, the deeper fork glimmers with overlapping traces: hot ash, cold metal, and a fading ward-signature leading beneath the mill.

Others come when the sky darkens. The metal one hunts the old stones, not my daughter. Your kind should not follow it.

The juvenile dragon settles beside the basin, watching Rui with growing trust. Above, the mill groans again, and dust sifts from the ceiling as something heavy crosses the upper floor.
