Size Matters: Your Hero, Drawn at Their Real Height

Body Size now takes a height. Write 4 ft 2 in, 15 cm or 50 feet, and your scenes draw your hero at that size next to everyone else. We already added the heights you wrote in your heroes' descriptions.

Some heroes are not built to human scale. A thumb-sized fairy who rides in a coat pocket. A halfling who comes up to a guard's belt. A fifty-foot tarrasque who has to duck under a castle gate.

Until now, LiveTale gave you three choices for Body Size: Small, Medium and Large. That was fine for most heroes, but it could not say "six inches" or "fifty feet". Many of you wrote the height into your hero's description instead, and the scenes kept drawing your hero at roughly human size anyway.

Two versions of the same scene in a ruined throne hall. On the left, an orange scaled tarrasque woman stands only a little taller than an armored knight. On the right, she towers over him, and the knight barely reaches her knee.

Add a height to Body Size

Body Size is now a field you can type into. Pick Small, Medium or Large as before, or describe the size in your own words and add a height with a unit:

  • Small, 4 feet 2 in
  • Large, 7 ft
  • a palm-sized pixie, 15 cm
  • a towering ogre, 2.5 m

Feet, inches, centimeters and meters all work. You will find Body Size in the character wizard, and on your hero's character page under Character Profile, where the pencil lets you edit it in place. Tap the (?) next to Body Size for more examples.

Type the height right into Body Size.

We already did the work for you. Before launching this feature, we read the heights you had written in your heroes' descriptions and added them to Body Size, checking every one by hand. That covers about 4,900 heroes. If we got your hero's height wrong, or you would like a different size, just edit Body Size, and your next scenes will use it.

A height only changes the scenes when it is unusual. If your hero is somewhere between about 5 and 6 and a half feet tall, nothing changes: they were already drawn at human size.

See the difference

When your hero is much smaller or much larger than a person, the storyteller now plans every scene around that, and the artist draws your hero at the right size next to everyone else in the frame. A three-foot hero now walks beside their human friends at about half their height, as you always pictured.

This works in party tales too: every hero in your party is drawn at their own height.

One honest note for the giants among you: very large heroes are drawn big beside others, but a single scene may not always show their full scale. We are still working on fitting a fifty-foot hero and a person into the same frame.

Go measure your heroes, and tell us how they look. We read every message.
