Combat that flows with the story: introducing Narrative Mode

Combat now resolves through the same action flow as everything else, with the narrator describing the outcome. The old dice dialog is still there if you prefer it, but Narrative Mode is on by default.

Combat has always been the moment LiveTale stops feeling like a story and starts feeling like a board game. A dedicated dialog pops up, dice spin, hit points tick down. Even when a fight was good, the interruption of the fight rarely was.

Today we're shipping Combat Mode, a per-player setting that lets you choose how combat is resolved.

Narrative Mode (new default)

In Narrative Mode, combat resolves through the same action flow as anything else you do. You type what your character attempts, the regular dice roll resolves it, and the narrator describes the outcome alongside everything else happening in the scene. No separate combat dialog. No hit point bar to watch.

Wounds, defeats, and victories still happen and still stick. The storyteller writes them into the scene the way a novel would. A blow that lands hard might leave you wounded going into the next exchange. A finishing strike still kills. The mechanics underneath are quieter, but the stakes are the same.

Mechanical Mode (opt-in)

If you liked the dice dialog, it's still here. Switch to Mechanical Mode in Game Settings and combat goes back to the dedicated panel with offense and defense pills, side-by-side rolls, and explicit hit point attrition.

How to switch

Open Game Settings from the account menu (or from the bottom of any scene-end dialog) and find the Combat Mode row. Narrative is on the left, Mechanical is on the right. Tap either; the change saves immediately and applies to your next combat exchange.

Why we made Narrative the default

A few reasons.

First, combat in solo RPGs tends to be the most "I'm playing a system" moment of the session, and the most "I'm in a story" moments we hear about are the ones where combat folded smoothly into the narrative.

Second, the dedicated combat dialog made losing a fight feel a lot bigger than losing any other contest. A bad action roll feels like bad luck; a combat exchange that drains your hit points to zero felt like a failed system. We wanted combat outcomes to feel like story beats, not game-over screens.

Third, when we tested narrative combat internally, the fights actually became more memorable, not less. Without the dice dialog to anchor the moment, the narrator had room to describe the parry, the stumble, the moment of mercy, the trick that turned the fight. The mechanics got quieter; the story got louder.

If you try Narrative Mode and miss the dice, the toggle is one click away. If you stay on Mechanical and ever want to come back, same.
