Recruit a Hero, Skip Session Zero: Start an Instant Solo Campaign with an AI Dungeon Master
Session zero is the tax you pay before the fun starts: rulebooks, point budgets, backstory homework. Skip it. Recruit a campaign-ready hero with a portrait, a story hook, and a full character sheet, and start a solo campaign with an AI dungeon master in under a minute.
Every tabletop campaign begins with the same speed bump: session zero. Before anyone rolls a die, somebody has to build a character - pick a race and class, budget the stats, invent a backstory, name the thing. With a group, that's an evening of rulebooks and scheduling. Playing solo, it's worse: you are the player AND the dungeon master, and the blank character sheet is staring at you alone. Here's how to skip all of it and be mid-adventure in the next minute.

What is session zero, and why does it stop solo players cold?
Session zero is the tabletop tradition of spending your first session on setup instead of play: character creation, world introduction, table rules. It exists for a good reason - a campaign runs better when the hero fits the world. But it front-loads all the homework before any of the payoff, and for solo roleplayers it's the single most common place a campaign dies. You sit down excited to play a solo adventure, meet a five-step character builder, and the excitement leaks out one form field at a time.
LiveTale now has a shortcut: recruit a campaign-ready hero instead of building one. Six pre-made heroes live in Thornmark, a frontier province built to feel like the fantasy campaigns you know - a fallen empire, a chartered adventurers' guild, barrow-wights, a young dragon taxing the mountain passes, and something stirring beneath the ruined capital. Each hero comes with a finished portrait, a story hook tied to the world, and a complete character sheet. Pick one and you're playing.
Want the full setting first? Read Thornmark: Solo Campaign Lore for D&D Fans - every location and character in the lore travels with your hero into the game as an authoritative world reference.
One click to start recruiting
When you create a character in LiveTale, the first screen now offers two paths: craft your own hero with the step-by-step wizard, or Recruit a Hero. One click opens the roster.

Choose any of the six heroes - free
The roster covers the classic party roles, so whatever you'd normally play at a table, there's a seat for you:
- Ser Branna Coldwell, human fighter - reseal the barrows before the dead reach town
- Kaelen Thornstride, half-orc ranger - reopen the dragon-taxed mountain passes
- Elowen Vairis, elf wizard - open the sealed tower that has been waiting for her
- Pip Fenwick, halfling rogue - learn who is buying grave-dirt in imperial coin
- Sister Bryn Vhalen, dwarf cleric - quiet the bells that ring without hands
- Seryth Kade, tiefling warlock - break the family debt signed in the Cinderfall
Recruiting is free. No Pages, no purchase, no catch - the hero lands in your roster with their portrait and sheet, ready for their first scene.

Compare their stats before you commit - and edit everything after
Click any hero to flip their card over and read the full sheet: attributes, skills, gifts and faults, inventory, goal, and nemesis. This is the actual character sheet the game plays with - real stats that drive real dice rolls, not flavor text. LiveTale runs on the Fudge system rather than a d20, so a ranger reads like a ranger (Great Ranged Combat, Good Survival and Stealth) without you needing to learn a rulebook first.
And recruiting is a starting point, not a contract. After you recruit, every detail stays editable - rename them, rewrite the backstory, reallocate stats, even regenerate the portrait from your own reference image. The session-zero work isn't gone forever; it's just moved to after you've fallen for the character, where it stops being homework.

What happens after you recruit?
Your AI dungeon master takes it from there. LiveTale opens a scene built around your hero's story hook, illustrates it, and hands you the reins: act, ask questions of the world, roll dice when the outcome is uncertain, and watch quests, inventory, and consequences accumulate scene by scene. It's a structured solo campaign - dice, character sheets, quest logs, scene pacing - not a freeform chat that forgets your sword after three messages.
So if session zero has ever eaten the evening you meant to spend adventuring: recruit your hero and see where the road out of Harrowgate goes.
Cheers,
