Featured Science Fiction Tale: Drake Orion’s Adventure
Scene 1: Standoff at the Kaelo Excavation
Location: Kaelo Prime bioluminescent jungle
The humid air of Kaelo Prime clings like a wet shroud as dawn breaks over the bioluminescent jungle. Drake Orion crouches behind a thick, pulsating fern, his laser pistol humming with a low charge. Ten meters ahead, a rusted excavation terminal stands amidst the roots. A stern woman in a grey corporate uniform stands over a kneeling scholar.
Zoya: “The Guild charter gives us total jurisdiction over these relics, Amara. Hand over the data pad, or consider your tenure terminated permanently.”
Amara: “This research belongs to the colony, not a board of directors on a dying station. You have no right to strip this site.”
Drake Orion (thinks): The corporate muscle is scanning the perimeter, and Zoya’s hand is already hovering over her holster. If I move now, I might save the girl and grab the map, but the sensor array will ping my position. If I wait, the Guild will walk away with the coordinates to my treasure.
Zoya draws her weapon, leveling it at the scholar’s temple.
A violent tremor shakes the forest floor. The ground beneath the excavation terminal fissures, spewing a pressurized cloud of glowing blue spores into the air. Through the sudden haze, a jagged, metallic drone descends from the canopy. It ignores the Guild operative and the scholar, locking its crimson sensors directly onto Drake Orion.
Drake Orion (thinks): That is not a Guild drone. It looks like ancient security tech from the pre-colonization era. If the terminal is keyed to this thing, I have just triggered a guardian.
Zoya: “What in the name of the Core is that? Amara, what did you wake up?”
Amara: “I told you. This site was never abandoned. It was imprisoned.”
The drone emits a high-pitched, harmonic whine, charging its central aperture. Zoya stumbles back, her weapon wavering between the scholar and the machine.
