Scene 1: Tension at the Cornfield Crime Scene

Location: Muddy cornfield

The scent of damp earth and rotting stalks hangs heavy over the cornfield. Rain clouds bruise the horizon, casting the search grid in a sickly, gray light. Anna steps over a discarded rubber boot, her eyes scanning the trampled rows. Officer Miller stands near the edge of the police tape, his hands buried deep in his pockets, his posture rigid.

Miller: “You should turn back, Anna. This is an active crime scene, not a playground for private grievances.”

Anna (thinks): He is sweating despite the chill. His left hand is twitching toward his holster every time I shift my weight. He knows exactly where the body was dumped, or he is terrified of who put it there.

Anna: “My father was a detective, Miller. I know the difference between a grid search and a cleanup crew. Why are you standing on the perimeter instead of walking the line?”

Miller: “Orders. Now step away before I have you detained for obstruction.”

Anna (thinks): He glances toward the dense thicket at the north edge of the field, his pulse visible in the frantic throb at his throat. He is waiting for a signal.
